Join Wakefield's community walk audit, September 9th
WalkMassachusetts is organizing a Safe Walk Audit in Wakefield on Wed Sept 9th, 2026 at 6pm by the Galvin Middle School.
All are welcome to this guided, interactive experience where community members evaluate how safe, accessible, and user-friendly our streets and public spaces are for everyone. The area of this audit is particularly important as it is where the Rail Trail, Galvin Middle School, and future EnvisionWakefield project all intersect.
During the audit, participants will walk through key areas near the Main Street/Water Street and Main Street/Nahant Street/North Avenue intersections. Together, we will identify both challenges and opportunities related to:
- Safe crossings, sidewalks, and access for people of all ages and abilities
- Heat exposure, shade, trees, and other “heat island” conditions
- Flooding, drainage, and weather-related barriers to getting around
- Street and sidewalk improvements that support safer, more sustainable mobility
- Community priorities for a more walkable and climate-ready Wakefield

Safe Streets Wakefield seeks to improve the quality of life for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers alike by reducing traffic injuries and increasing the accessibility and enjoyment of our shared roadways.
We provide a strong community voice and technical expertise focused on helping Wakefield adopt best practices for multi-modal transportation. This includes safe and visible crosswalks and signage, designated bike lanes, and consistent, continuous sidewalks.
